Akzo Nobel Webinar on Reducing the Cost of Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) Wednesday, October 30, 2019 entitled:
CUI Miitigation – Reduce Risk, Improve Productivity – A Technical Comparison between Traditional Coating Technologies and Alkylated Amine Epoxy Technology for CUI Mitigation.
by George Sykes (Product Manager, Oil & Gas Akzo Nobel) and Ana Sanseau-Blanchard (Technical Specialist, Marine Protective Coatings R& D Akzo Nobel)
When applied properly it (Epoxy Phenolic) shows good resistance to corrosion under insulation. Unfortunately it (Epoxy Phenolic) does present some challenges for large complicated projects. If the EP coating does not cure than that is where your CUI will start and it will compromise the whole system. EP coatings can be slow drying and very sensitive to over application. EP coatings are particularly sensitive to over application of DFT. When the asset is put into service and when it heats up your very likely to see cracking if the paint has been over applied. We asked ourselves the question how do you apply a DFT sensitive coating like an epoxy phenolic to a wide variety of pipes, valves and vessels?….and the answer is that it is really, really hard. In real life when people are moving quickly maybe to increase productivity especially coating something like a valve I think it is almost impossible to get a DFT within the very narrow confines that is required for a traditional epoxy phenolic. In the field EP coatings are increasingly being specified without a durable topcoat or insulation. A combination of extreme UV and very heavy rainfall has actually had an erosive effect on the EP coating leading to reduced anticorrosion protection………more
