INDUSTRY NEWS

PETRONAS Launches New Graphene-Based Corrosion Protection Technology
Malaysian oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) has launched a new paint additive formulated with graphene to protect steel structures against corrosion ProShield+ can reportedly double the average lifespan of surface coating to last up to 16 years.
Developed in-house by Petronas, the additive has reportedly been proven to strengthen coatings’ resistance against harsh weather conditions and protect assets from corroding agents. According to the release, ProShield+ has been piloted and deployed at specific Petronas upstream and downstream assets.  The company reports that the formulation contains overall three times higher water barrier properties than conventional epoxy paint and helps to improve adhesion as well as resistance against abrasion and ultraviolet (UV). It has also shown up to three times more improvement in abrasion resistance than conventional epoxy paint. It can be added to major paint systems without requiring any change to the existing blending process, applied the same way as other coats of paint.

Critical Questions for Protective Coatings for Asset Protection in Oil & Gas, LNG:

  • Why is the coating not stopping corrosion?
  • Why is the coating delaminating or blistering?
  • Has the coating been correctly specified / applied?
  • Does the coating meet the manufacturing standard, including properties such as correct hardness/cure, adhesion and thickness?
  • What surface preparation and atmospheric conditions must be achieved to successfully apply the coating?
  • Does the coating have any defects in it? How will these affect performance?
  • Why did the coating fail? Root cause assessment.
  • How can the coating be successfully repaired/remediated so that it doesn’t fail again?

ExcelPlas Labs can answer these questions and more…
